Transfiguration of the Lord

Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14; 2 Peter 1:16-19; Matthew 17:1-9

Today marks the 75th anniversary of the dropping of the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. This horrific event and the subsequent obliteration of Nagasaki a few days later brought a quick end to World War II. We entered the atomic age, and we have lived with the threat of nuclear war ever since.

When J. Robert Oppenheimer, one of the scientists who worked on the Manhattan Project, witnessed the first successful test of the atomic bomb in Los Alamos, New Mexico just weeks before the destruction of Hiroshima, he quoted the sacred Hindu text, the Bhagavad Gita: “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.” That flash of light brought terrible destruction.

Another flash of light, the Transfiguration, revealed Jesus as the Son of God and the Light of the World—a light that brings peace, not war; love, not enmity; and life, not death.  We are called to be the bearers and mirrors of that light.

Hoy se cumple el 75º aniversario del lanzamiento de la primera bomba atómica sobre Hiroshima, Japón. Este horrible evento y la subsiguiente destrucción de Nagasaki unos días más tarde puso fin rápidamente a la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Entramos en la era atómica, y hemos vivido con la amenaza de una guerra nuclear desde entonces.

Cuando J. Robert Oppenheimer, uno de los científicos que trabajó en el Proyecto Manhattan, presenció la primera prueba exitosa de la bomba atómica en Los Álamos, Nuevo México, pocas semanas antes de la destrucción de Hiroshima, citó el sagrado texto hindú, el Bhagavad Gita: "Ahora me he convertido en la Muerte, el destructor de mundos". Ese destello de luz trajo una terrible destrucción.

Otro destello de luz, la Transfiguración, reveló a Jesús como el Hijo de Dios y la Luz del Mundo, una luz que trae paz, no guerra; amor, no enemistad; y vida, no muerte. Estamos llamados a ser los portadores y espejos de esa luz.
