A Matter of Substance | Una Cuestión de Sustancia

John 12:44-50

Following his final and triumphant entry into Jerusalem and just before the Last Supper, Jesus cries out in exasperation, especially with those who refuse to believe in him. He reminds them of who he is and what he was sent to do. First, he is one with the Father who sent him and told him what to say. Second, he came to bring light to our world and to save rather than condemn.

One of the common criticisms that people (especially the young) level against the Church and her members is that we are “judgmental.” Often what they really mean is that it seems that we spend an inordinate amount of time condemning and scolding.

Making and then acting on judgments about right and wrong and good and evil is essential to our life in Christ. That is what he did. But he did so in a spirit of love and with a desire to save. It is more than a matter of tone or style. It is a matter of substance, and that substance is the Gospel.

Después de su última y triunfal entrada en Jerusalén y justo antes de la Última Cena, Jesús grita exasperado, especialmente con aquellos que se niegan a creer en él.  Les recuerda quién es y para qué fue enviado. Primero, es uno con el Padre que lo envió y le dijo qué decir. Segundo, vino a traer luz a nuestro mundo y a salvar en lugar de condenar.

Una de las críticas más comunes que la gente (especialmente los jóvenes) hace contra la Iglesia y sus miembros es que somos "juiciosos." A menudo lo que realmente quieren decir es que parece que pasamos una cantidad excesiva de tiempo condenando y regañando.

Hacer y luego actuar en juicios sobre el bien y el mal y el bien y el mal es esencial para nuestra vida en Cristo. Eso es lo que hizo. Pero lo hizo con un espíritu de amor y con el deseo de salvar. Es más que una cuestión de tono o estilo. Es una cuestión de sustancia, y esa sustancia es el Evangelio.
