St. Augustine Zhao Rong and Companions

Hosea 11:1-4, 8e-9; Matthew 10:7-15

Jesus sent out the 12 apostles to do what he did. They proclaimed, “The kingdom of heaven is at hand!” He also gave them his power to perform signs that revealed the advent of that kingdom: signs of healing, cleansing, and restoration and the vanquishing of death and evil. 

God’s kingdom is one of love and compassion. These virtues too often seem in short supply in our world…sometimes even in the church. They are threatening to people and systems devoted to greed, anger, pride, and other vices.  

St. Augustine Zhao Rong and his companions were martyred in China centuries ago because they were considered enemies of the state. Many Christians today in China and elsewhere are persecuted and sometimes martyred for the same reasons. They need our prayers and support.

Jesús envió a los 12 apóstoles para hacer lo que hizo. Proclamaron: "¡El reino de los cielos está cerca!" También les dio su poder para realizar señales que revelaran el advenimiento de ese reino: señales de curación, limpieza y restauración y la derrota de la muerte y el mal. 

El reino de Dios es uno de amor y compasión. Estas virtudes a menudo parecen escasas en nuestro mundo... a veces incluso en la iglesia. Son una amenaza para la gente y los sistemas dedicados a la codicia, la ira, el orgullo y otros vicios.  

San Agustín Zhao Rong y sus compañeros fueron martirizados en China hace siglos porque eran considerados enemigos del estado. Muchos cristianos de hoy en día en China y en otros lugares son perseguidos y a veces martirizados por las mismas razones.  Ellos necesitan nuestras oraciones y apoyo.
