Blindness

Memorial of St. John Damascene

Isaiah 29:17-24; Matthew 9:27-31

The healing of the blind is a common biblical sign of God’s presence and redemptive power.  Isaiah used it to speak of Israel’s restored relationship with God. The gospel writers used it to underscore the new relationship between God and all humanity in Christ.

There are many forms of blindness, including total, partial, functional, or legal. Not all blindness is physical, either. For example, one can be spiritually blind. Some search, grope, and stumble with little idea of what or whom they are seeking. Others are so rigidly and anxiously tied to their existing beliefs that they leave little room for the light of the Spirit to enter. Their hearts and minds are closed.

One can also be morally blind, refusing to consider the thoughts, feelings, needs, or rights of others, especially those who don’t look, speak, think, or believe as we do.  Many profess their Catholic faith but in practice subordinate it to their political ideology or party affiliation. 

As a penitential season, Advent is a time for me to consider my blindness and, like the men in today’s gospel reading, to ask for and trust in the Lord’s grace and mercy. jc

Isaías 29:17-24; Mateo 9:27-31

La curación de los ciegos es un signo bíblico común de la presencia y el poder redentor de Dios.  Isaías lo usó para hablar de la relación restaurada de Israel con Dios. Los escritores del evangelio lo usaron para subrayar la nueva relación entre Dios y toda la humanidad en Cristo.

Hay muchas formas de ceguera, incluyendo total, parcial, funcional o legal. No toda la ceguera es física, tampoco. Por ejemplo, uno puede ser espiritualmente ciego.  Algunos buscan, andan a tientas y tropiezan con poca idea de qué o a quién buscan.  Otros están tan rígida y ansiosamente atados a sus creencias existentes que dejan poco espacio para que entre la luz del Espíritu.   Sus corazones y mentes están cerrados.

Uno también puede ser moralmente ciego, negándose a considerar los pensamientos, sentimientos, necesidades o derechos de los demás, especialmente de aquellos que no miran, hablan, piensan o creen como nosotros.  Muchos profesan su fe católica, pero en la práctica la subordinan a su ideología política o afiliación partidaria.

Como un tiempo de penitencia, el Adviento es un tiempo para que yo considere mi ceguera y, como los hombres en la lectura del evangelio de hoy, pedir y confiar en la gracia y la misericordia del Señor. jc
