St. Clare of Assisi
Deuteronomy 34:1-12; Matthew 18:15-20

Today’s feast reminds us of something we don’t always consider: There are significantly more women in the Franciscan Family than men. While there are relatively few members of the Second Order, i.e., cloistered nuns like the Poor Clare Sisters, there are many women who are members of the Third Order, either as members of the numerous religious congregations of women or as members of the Order of Franciscan Seculars.

St. Clare followed St. Francis because he followed Jesus. She joined her friend and mentor in Assisi she witnessed in him his desire and effort to live the gospel in a radical way.

The founders of religious movements at some point find themselves in the same position as Moses in today’s first reading. They can see the fruits of their labors and God’s help after many years of struggle, but they must let go of what they have started and leave it to others to carry on. This isn’t easy, especially when things go in directions different than one’s visions and plans. Dying to self must precede bodily death.

The continued viability of the Franciscan movement is a testament to the power of God’s grace and the charisms of its founders. Francis and Clare were able to cultivate in others a spirit of brotherhood and sisterhood, reconciliation, and common purpose that Jesus describes in today’s gospel reading. We give thanks for their inspiration and perseverance, and we rely on their prayers. - jc

Santa Clara de Asís

La fiesta de hoy nos recuerda algo que no siempre tenemos en cuenta: En la Familia Franciscana hay muchas más mujeres que hombres. Mientras que hay relativamente pocos miembros de la Segunda Orden, es decir, monjas de clausura como las Hermanas Clarisas, hay muchas mujeres que son miembros de la Tercera Orden, ya sea como miembros de las numerosas congregaciones religiosas de mujeres o como miembros de la Orden de Franciscanos Seglares.

Santa Clara siguió a San Francisco porque él siguió a Jesús. Se unió a su amigo y mentor en Asís y fue testigo de su deseo y esfuerzo por vivir el Evangelio de forma radical.

Los fundadores de movimientos religiosos se encuentran en algún momento en la misma situación que Moisés en la primera lectura de hoy. Pueden ver los frutos de su trabajo y la ayuda de Dios después de muchos años de lucha, pero deben desprenderse de lo que han empezado y dejar que otros lo continúen. Esto no es fácil, especialmente cuando las cosas van en direcciones diferentes a las visiones y planes de uno. Morir a sí mismo debe preceder a la muerte corporal.

La continua viabilidad del movimiento franciscano es un testimonio del poder de la gracia de Dios y de los carismas de sus fundadores. Francisco y Clara fueron capaces de cultivar en otros un espíritu de hermandad, reconciliación y propósito común que Jesús describe en la lectura del Evangelio de hoy.
