Queenship of Mary

Matthew 23:1-12

Today, at the end of the Octave of the Assumption, the Church celebrates the Queenship of Mary. Jesus’ mother is a wonderful example of what he teaches in our gospel reading.  The woman who called herself “the handmaid of the Lord” (Luke 1:38) is now Queen of Heaven. The one who surrendered herself to God’s plan for our salvation is now exalted.

Mary stands in contrast to the religious leaders Jesus critiques in this passage. They perform religious acts to be seen rather than give glory to God or grow in holiness. They are fond of the external signs of religiosity but neglect the inner transformation that gives those signs real power. They seek titles and perks of office but forget that the purpose of their ministry is to serve God and others. 

We face the same temptations today. Mary, handmaid of the Lord and Queen of Heaven, pray for us!

La reina de María

Mateo 23:1-12

Hoy, al final de la Octava de la Asunción, la Iglesia celebra la Reina de María. La madre de Jesús es un maravilloso ejemplo de lo que enseña en nuestra lectura del evangelio.  La mujer que se llamaba a sí misma "la sierva del Señor" (Lucas 1:38) es ahora la Reina del Cielo. La que se entregó al plan de Dios para nuestra salvación es ahora exaltada.

María contrasta con los líderes religiosos que Jesús critica en este pasaje. Realizan actos religiosos para ser vistos en lugar de dar gloria a Dios o crecer en santidad. Les gustan los signos externos de la religiosidad pero descuidan la transformación interior que da a esos signos un poder real. Buscan títulos y privilegios, pero olvidan que el propósito de su ministerio es servir a Dios y a los demás. 

Hoy en día nos enfrentamos a las mismas tentaciones. ¡María, sierva del Señor y Reina del Cielo, ruega por nosotros!
