It Starts with the Feet | Comienza con los Pies

Acts 13:13-35; John 13:16-20

In the synagogue at Antioch, Paul ends his testimony about Jesus with the testimony of John the Baptist:  “Behold,” John said, “one is coming after me; I am not worthy to unfasten the sandals of his feet. Such work was usually done by slaves or those who accepted the most humbling service of hospitality. In John’s account of the Last Supper, however, Jesus—our Lord and Master—takes that gesture a step further. He washes his disciples’ feet, and he tells them to do the same for each other.  

Our feet, especially the bottoms of our feet, are among the most sensitive parts of the human body. They do more than help us to get around. They also help to ground us.  When we wash the feet of others, we’re doing more than welcoming them or cleaning them up. We’re recognizing their humanity and their place in the world. Part of our vocational discernment is asking God, “How do you want me to wash the feet of my brothers and sisters?”

It’s often observed that love starts in the heart. That’s true, but sometimes it also starts with the feet.

En la sinagoga de Antioquía, Pablo termina su testimonio sobre Jesús con el testimonio de Juan el Bautista:  "He aquí", dijo Juan, "uno viene detrás de mí; no soy digno de desatar las sandalias de sus pies". Este trabajo era normalmente realizado por esclavos o por aquellos que aceptaban el más humilde servicio de hospitalidad. Sin embargo, en el relato de Juan sobre la Última Cena, Jesús - nuestro Señor y Maestro - lleva ese gesto un paso más allá. Lava los pies de sus discípulos, y les dice que hagan lo mismo entre ellos.  

Nuestros pies, especialmente la parte inferior de los mismos, son una de las partes más sensibles del cuerpo humano. Hacen más que ayudarnos a movernos. También nos ayudan a mantenernos en tierra. Cuando lavamos los pies de otros, hacemos más que darles la bienvenida o limpiarlos. Estamos reconociendo su humanidad y su lugar en el mundo. Parte de nuestro discernimiento vocacional es preguntarle a Dios, "¿Cómo quieres que lave los pies de mis hermanos y hermanas?"

A menudo se observa que el amor comienza en el corazón. Eso es cierto, pero a veces también comienza con los pies.
