Friday of the 9th Week in Ordinary Time
Tobit 11:5-17; Mark 12:35-37

Sometimes I’m ready to despair over all the negativity on the internet and social media.  Thankfully, it is also in those moments that I will see or receive something that lifts my spirits and restores my faith in humanity and the possibilities of technology. It may be a tweet or a Facebook post. Some of the most uplifting are the videos that show a soldier, sailor, or marine returning from overseas to surprise a family member at a graduation, birthday party, or ball game. Their smiles, tears, hugs, and shouts of joy are inspiring.

Although there’s no video, our first reading tells the story of a similar reunion. Tobit and Anna are joyfully reunited with their son Tobiah, whom they feared could be gone forever. Their happiness is doubled when Tobit’s sight is restored with God’s grace and an ointment of fish gall. It is tripled when they greet their new daughter-in-law, Sarah, at the gates of Nineveh.

It is said that absence makes the heart grow fonder. Absence can also be the space where God’s grace and power can work miracles. - jc

Tobías 11,5-17; Marcos 12,35-37

A veces estoy dispuesto a desesperarme por toda la negatividad que hay en Internet y en las redes sociales. Afortunadamente, es también en esos momentos cuando veo o recibo algo que me levanta el ánimo y me devuelve la fe en la humanidad y en las posibilidades de la tecnología. Puede ser un tuit o una publicación en Facebook. Algunos de los más edificantes son los vídeos que muestran a un soldado, marinero o infante de marina que regresa del extranjero para sorprender a un familiar en una graduación, una fiesta de cumpleaños o un partido de fútbol.  Sus sonrisas, lágrimas, abrazos y gritos de alegría son inspiradores.

Aunque no hay vídeo, nuestra primera lectura cuenta la historia de un reencuentro similar. Tobit y Ana se reúnen con alegría con su hijo Tobías, al que temían que se fuera para siempre. Su felicidad se duplica cuando la vista de Tobit se restablece con la gracia de Dios y un ungüento de hiel de pescado. Se triplica cuando reciben a su nueva nuera, Sara, a las puertas de Nínive.

Se dice que la ausencia hace que el corazón se vuelva más cariñoso. La ausencia también puede ser el espacio donde la gracia y el poder de Dios pueden obrar milagros. - jc
