More Than a Name | Más que un Nombre

Acts 11:19-26; John 10:22-30

We learn at the end of today’s first reading that it was in Antioch that those who followed the way of Jesus and accepted him as the Messiah were first called Christians. They gentiles as well as Jews, people from different places and speaking different languages. 

When Barnabas was sent from Jerusalem to Antioch to discover what this was all about, he could only marvel when he witnessed the grace of God at work among them all.  

At the end of his discourse on the Good Shepherd in John 6, Jesus distinguishes his sheep from those who demanded that he plainly proclaim himself as the Christ. Jesus tells them that the problem is not what he has said but rather what they have refused to hear.  

Sometimes we forget that being a Christian is not a brand or label but rather a decision and a response. It is not a name but a way of being and living. Being part of the flock is not merely being a sheep but rather hearing his voice, following him, and entrusting ourselves to him.

Aprendemos al final de la primera lectura de hoy que fue en Antioquía que aquellos que siguieron el camino de Jesús y lo aceptaron como el Mesías fueron llamados cristianos por primera vez. Tanto gentiles como judíos, gente de diferentes lugares y que hablaban diferentes idiomas. Cuando Bernabé fue enviado desde Jerusalén a Antioquía para descubrir de qué se trataba, sólo pudo maravillarse cuando fue testigo de la gracia de Dios actuando entre todos ellos.  

Al final de su discurso sobre el Buen Pastor en Juan 6, Jesús distingue a sus ovejas de las que le exigen que se proclame claramente como el Cristo. Jesús les dice que el problema no es lo que él ha dicho sino lo que ellos se han negado a escuchar.  

A veces olvidamos que ser cristiano no es una marca o etiqueta sino una decisión y una respuesta.  No es un nombre sino una forma de ser y vivir. Ser parte del rebaño no es simplemente ser una oveja, sino más bien escuchar su voz, seguirlo y confiarnos a él.
