St. Thomas, Apostle
Ephesians 2:19-22; John 20:24-29

It sounds like a shaky foundation.

When St. Paul describes the church as being built “on the foundation of the apostles,” and when we consider men like St. Thomas, it’s tempting to be skeptical or afraid. The apostles were ordinary and generally uneducated men. They had faith in Jesus, but there were times when they were overwhelmed by fear. As Jesus was arrested, tried, convicted, and executed, most of them abandoned him and went into hiding.

News of his resurrection shocked them. It was only when Jesus appeared to them behind locked doors that they began to believe. Thomas had the misfortune of being absent, and any one of the other apostles could have reacted with the same disbelief that he had.  When Jesus appeared to them, severely wounded yet fully alive, they were able to put their faith in him. He became their capstone, and they were strengthened.

These ordinary men did extraordinary things. It is said that St. Thomas founded the church in India. Today India, a country that less than two percent Catholic, is the 21st century Ireland, sending out priests and religious to evangelize the world. Our Capuchin province is blessed with friars from India serving in our soup kitchens, retreat center, and in initial formation. Through the intercession of St. Thomas, we pray that they and their work will be blessed and that the church in India will continue to grow. - jc

Parece un fundamento inestable.

Cuando San Pablo describe la iglesia como construida "sobre el fundamento de los apóstoles", y cuando consideramos a hombres como Santo Tomás, es tentador ser escéptico o tener miedo. Los apóstoles eran hombres comunes y corrientes y, por lo general, incultos. Tenían fe en Jesús, pero hubo momentos en los que se vieron abrumados por el miedo. Cuando Jesús fue arrestado, juzgado, condenado y ejecutado, la mayoría de ellos lo abandonaron y se escondieron.

La noticia de su resurrección les impactó. Sólo cuando Jesús se les apareció a puerta cerrada empezaron a creer. Tomás tuvo la desgracia de estar ausente, y cualquiera de los otros apóstoles podría haber reaccionado con la misma incredulidad que él. Cuando Jesús se les apareció, gravemente herido pero plenamente vivo, pudieron poner su fe en él. Se convirtió en su piedra angular, y fueron fortalecidos.

Estos hombres ordinarios hicieron cosas extraordinarias. Se dice que Santo Tomás fundó la Iglesia en la India. Hoy la India, un país que tiene menos del dos por ciento de católicos, es la Irlanda del siglo XXI, que envía sacerdotes y religiosos a evangelizar el mundo. Nuestra provincia capuchina ha sido bendecida con frailes de la India que sirven en nuestros comedores sociales, en el centro de retiros y en la formación inicial. Por la intercesión de Santo Tomás, rezamos para que ellos y su trabajo sean bendecidos y para que la iglesia en la India siga creciendo. - jc
