Memorial of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton

Today we remember one of the great figures in the history of the Catholic Church in the United States.  St. Elizabeth Ann Seton began her adulthood as a loving wife, mother, and a member of the Episcopal Church.  After the failure of the family business and her husband’s death to tuberculosis, she decided to become Catholic.  It was a daring move in the early 19th century, and she was ostracized by many relatives and friends.

That wasn’t the last of Elizabeth Seton’s daring moves.  To support her family, she started a Catholic school in Baltimore.  Not long after, she founded a religious community, the Sisters of Charity, to staff the school.  She is considered one of the founders of the Catholic school system in the United States.

Elizabeth Seton had a keen sense of life and death.  Her mother and younger sister died when she was a child, and in addition to her husband she also lost two of her five children.  Elizabeth herself died at age 46.  Perhaps the awareness of her mortality helped to work that much harder to establish schools that would help proclaim the kingdom of God.  Against great odds and opposition, she had faith that the one who was in her was greater than the one who was in the world.

Many Catholic schools today are struggling for survival.  Urban Catholic school systems that were once beacons of hope and opportunity are shadows of their former selves.  The coronavirus pandemic and its attendant economic woes have only made the situation worse.

Through the intercession of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, may God bless our Catholic schools with insightful and creative leaders, fervent supporters, and the resources that they need to fulfill their vital mission of educating and forming the next generation of disciples and leaders. jc

Memoria de Santa Elizabeth Ann Seton

Hoy recordamos a una de las grandes figuras en la historia de la Iglesia Católica en los Estados Unidos.  Santa Elizabeth Ann (Isabel Anna) Seton comenzó su adultez como una amorosa esposa, madre y miembro de la Iglesia Episcopal.  Después del fracaso del negocio familiar y la muerte de su esposo por tuberculosis, decidió convertirse en católica.  Fue una decisión audaz a principios del siglo XIX, y fue condenada al ostracismo por muchos parientes y amigos. 

Ese no fue el último de los atrevidos movimientos de Elizabeth Seton.  Para mantener a su familia, comenzó una escuela católica en Baltimore.  No mucho después, fundó una comunidad religiosa, las Hermanas de la Caridad, para atender la escuela.  Se la considera una de las fundadoras del sistema de escuelas católicas de los Estados Unidos. 

Elizabeth Seton tenía un agudo sentido de la vida y la muerte.  Su madre y su hermana menor murieron cuando ella era una niña, y además de su esposo también perdió dos de sus cinco hijos.  La propia Elizabeth murió a la edad de 46 años.  Tal vez la conciencia de su mortalidad ayudó a trabajar mucho más duro para establecer escuelas que ayudaran a proclamar el reino de Dios.  Contra todo pronóstico y oposición, tenía fe en que el que estaba en ella era más grande que el que estaba en el mundo. 

Muchas escuelas católicas de hoy en día están luchando por sobrevivir.  Los sistemas escolares católicos urbanos que una vez fueron faros de esperanza y oportunidad son sombras de su antiguo ser.  La pandemia del coronavirus y sus problemas económicos sólo han empeorado la situación. 

Por la intercesión de Santa Elizabeth Ann Seton, que Dios bendiga nuestras escuelas católicas con líderes perspicaces y creativos, fervientes partidarios, y los recursos que necesitan para cumplir su misión vital de educar y formar a la próxima generación de discípulos y líderes. jc
