Friday of the 22nd Week in Ordinary Time

1 Corinthians 4:1-5; Luke 5:33-39

In today’s first reading, St. Paul instructed the Corinthians to consider him and other ministers and leaders of the church as “servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.” This model ministry was one of the “fresh wineskins” into which the new wine of the gospel was to be poured.

Jesus was the first to pour that new wine. What made that remarkable was that he—the living gospel—was not only poured into those fresh wineskins but then also poured out himself in love for our salvation. St. Paul poetically describes this self-gift in Philippians 2:5-11, when he reminds the church at Philippi that they must have the same attitude.  

We recall the same thing when we celebrate the Mass. During the Eucharistic Prayer, the priest echoes the words of the Lord to his disciples at the Last Supper: “Take this, all of you, and drink from it. This is the chalice of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which will be poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in memory of me.” 

The call to be “servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God” is not exclusive to those who have been ordained or officially commissioned as ministers. As disciples of the Lord, baptized members of the body of Christ, we all share the call to serve in some way and to share what we have so generously received from God, each according to our gifts and vocations.

Viernes de la 22ª semana en tiempo ordinario

1 Corintios 4:1-5; Lucas 5:33-39

En la primera lectura de hoy, San Pablo instruyó a los Corintios a considerarlo a él y a otros ministros y líderes de la Iglesia como "servidores de Cristo y administradores de los misterios de Dios". Este ministerio modelo era uno de los "odres frescos" en los que se iba a verter el nuevo vino del evangelio.

Jesús fue el primero en verter ese vino nuevo. Lo que lo hizo notable fue que él, el evangelio viviente, no sólo fue vertido en esos odres frescos, sino que también se derramó a sí mismo en el amor por nuestra salvación. San Pablo describe poéticamente este don de sí mismo en Filipenses 2:5-11, cuando recuerda a la iglesia de Filipos que deben tener la misma actitud.  

Recordamos lo mismo cuando celebramos la misa. Durante la Plegaria Eucarística, el sacerdote hace eco de las palabras del Señor a sus discípulos en la Última Cena: "Tomen y beban todos de él, porqué este es el cáliz de mi sangre, sangre de la alianza nueva y eterna, que será derramada por ustedes y por muchos para el perdón de los pecados. Hagan esto en conmemoración mía". 

El llamado a ser "servidores de Cristo y administradores de los misterios de Dios" no es exclusivo de aquellos que han sido ordenados o comisionados oficialmente como ministros. Como discípulos del Señor, miembros bautizados del cuerpo de Cristo, todos compartimos la llamada a servir de alguna manera y a compartir lo que tan generosamente hemos recibido de Dios, cada uno según nuestros dones y vocaciones.
