Sowing and Reaping | Sembrando y Cosechando

2 Corinthians 9:6-10; John 12:24-26

My dad died four years ago today, just a couple of weeks before his 78th birthday. Dad was a big proponent of the law of sowing and reaping, that is, we generally (though not perfectly) get out of life what we put into it.

If I want to get good at a sport, I must work out and develop the necessary skills. If I want to learn to play a musical instrument or speak a different language, I must practice. If I want to succeed in school, I must study. If I want to advance in my job or ministry, I will need to pay my dues and learn how to be a good servant.

Life in Christ is similar. While we have the benefit of God’s grace and power, we must do our part, too. There are no shortcuts. Want to have a richer spiritual life? Make time for prayer, meditation, biblical and other spiritual reading. Want to be a better disciple of Jesus? Learn how to act and speak as he did, especially by reflecting on the gospels.  Want to follow the example of Lawrence and the other saints and bear fruit for the Lord? Get ready to die to yourself. - jc

Mi padre murió hoy hace cuatro años, justo un par de semanas antes de cumplir 78 años.  Mi padre era un gran defensor de la ley de la siembra y la cosecha, es decir, que generalmente (aunque no perfectamente) obtenemos de la vida lo que ponemos en ella.

Si quiero ser bueno en un deporte, debo entrenar y desarrollar las habilidades necesarias. Si quiero aprender a tocar un instrumento musical o a hablar otro idioma, debo practicar. Si quiero tener éxito en la escuela, debo estudiar. Si quiero avanzar en mi trabajo o ministerio, debo pagar mis cuotas y aprender a ser un buen servidor.

La vida en Cristo es similar. Aunque tenemos el beneficio de la gracia y el poder de Dios, también debemos hacer nuestra parte. No hay atajos. ¿Quieres tener una vida espiritual más rica? Dedica tiempo a la oración, la meditación, la lectura bíblica y otras lecturas espirituales. ¿Quieres ser un mejor discípulo de Jesús? Aprende a actuar y a hablar como él, especialmente reflexionando sobre los evangelios. ¿Quieres seguir el ejemplo de Lorenzo y de los demás santos y dar fruto para el Señor? Prepárate para morir a ti mismo. - jc
